Nozawa Onsen

##_Japan-Ski_##

The Resorts

Nozawa Onsen village is located at the foot of Kenashi-yama (1650m), among beautiful natural surroundings and a number of excellent onsen hot springs. The combined ski resorts of snow resort offers the best of modern facilities for skiers and snowboarders, while the Nozawa Onsen village itself manages to maintain its traditional atmosphere. When the snow arrives each year, so too do skiers and snowboarders keen to enjoy good snow cover in a distinctly Japanese setting. Energy levels in the town reflect the influx of visitors, rising as each ski season brings new members to the Nozawa Onsen family.

As a result of the 1998 Winter Olympics, Nozawa Ski Resort received a well needed facelift and guests have been utilising the Olympic standard facilities ever since. This is particularly seen through items such as the Yu Road, a long travelator that connects downtown Nozawa Onsen to the Hikage gondola, or even the gondola’s themselves! This infrastructure has had a lasting effect on Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort and makes for a fantastic experience.

There are 20 runs at Nozawa and they have a fantast split of difficulties, with 40% beginners and 30% for both intermediate and advanced skiers. There are also a plenty of facilities available, including a steep 39 degree run, terrain park with half pipe, long groomers and plenty of moguls. There really is something for everybody at Nozawa onsen.

This gives you the fantastic experience of traveling on the Shinkansen bullet train, a must do whilst in Japan. The alternate route is by catching the Nagano Snow Shuttle. This service departs from Narita or Haneda airports and is the most direct option, albeit slightly more expensive and requires more time, roughly 5.5hrs.

Narita/Haneda Airport, Tokyo to Iiyama - $228 per adult (5 day flexi JR East pass, aprox 3hrs) +

The Snow

Japan is blessed with some of the most, and finest, snow in the world. Japan’s snowfall is explained by the ‘ocean snow effect’, Some may know of the ‘Lake Snow Effect’ and for all intents and purposes, Ocean Snow Effect is very similar. The physics of this phenomena is quite straightforward, it occurs when cold air meets a relatively warm body water, which it subsequently absorbs moisture from, and once it reaches the landfall it becomes unstable and drops everything it brought along for the ride. Nozawa is in a prime position to reap the benefits of the bulky air mass that gathers over Siberia and traverses the Sea of Japan, situated roughly 50km from the coastline.

So prestigious is this snowfall that Nozawa has received, numerous times, in excess of 13m over a season. Quality and quantity are plentiful and it has become an absolute bounty for skiers and snowboards.  Whilst you can find a heap of snow on piste, some may be tempted by the fresh powder in amongst the trees. This is a big no-no in Nozawa Onsen, off piste skiing is highly patrolled and enforced with harsh punishments. If you are going off piste, be discreet or lose thy lift pass!

The Onsen

Nozawa Onsen is home to some of the finest quality hot springs in central Japan, boasting nutrient and mineral rich water flowing from deep underground. Another unique property of Nozawa Onsens water is that it is piping hot, there are some baths well over 40 degrees celsius! After a long days skiing, head over to any one of the onsen for a steamy bath to unwind. A key feature of Nozawa’s many onsen are their fine mineral contents, these minerals are said to help relieve the symptoms of neuralgia, dermatitis, whilst improving metabolism and aiding in blood circulation. It will also leave your skin feeling refreshed and it relaxes your muscles and joints, preparing you for your next day on the slopes!
