Niseko

The Resorts

Niseko has become a quite the hot spot for Australian skiers, along with many other ethnicities from all around the world, particularly due to its hospitality toward foreign guests and the adaptability of Niseko’s natives with reference to language and culture. Niseko United is the largest of the Hokkaido ski areas with 4 interlinked resorts; Annupuri, Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama and Hanazono, all of which are areas famous for deep powder snow.  The 68 ski runs offer one of the most equally distributed difficulty ratings throughout the numerous ski resorts in Japan, with 21 runs for beginners, 25 for intermediate skiers and 22 for the seasoned veterans.

Similar to many of the ski resorts in Japan, Niseko offers an All Mountain Lift Pass which gives you the ability to explore all 4 of Niseko’s ski resorts and their gondolas. Each resorts lifts have various different style of lifts which differ from run to run, including enclosed gondolas, quad chair lifts and express lifts.

Getting there

Niseko is located in the southwest quadrant of Hokkaido and has several modes of transport available for guests wishing to explore the area. First port of call is Sapporo’s New Chitose airport, which is is roughly 110km from Niseko and offers accessibility options from most major airports throughout Japan. Once in New Chitose Airport, you have the choice of a train or traveling by road. In Japan, train may seem the usual suspect for the most efficient route of getting to your destination, however, Niseko is one of these exceptions. The train system still uses older model regional trains that do take quite a while to reach your destination, in fact it is over 3 hours!

Do not despair, there is a significantly more efficient option which sees you travel by shuttle that ends up shaving close to an hour off your trip. Regular services run after many major flights into and out of New Chitose Airport and is quite easily the recommended way to get to and from Niseko. Similar to shuttle buses, there is also the option to the brave soul who wishes to rent a car and brave the conditions and make their own way to Niseko. As the weather is unpredictable and can produce adverse conditions, we do not recommend guests drive to Niseko.

Transport Options
New Chitose Airport to Niseko - Coach transfer, 2.5 hours
Sapporo to Niseko - Coach transfer, 2.5 hours
Niseko to Rusutsu - Coach transfer, 45 minutes

The Snow

People often talk about their love of European or North American ski resorts, and rightfully so. The question is often “is Japan really worth going to over North America or Europe?”. At this point, you need to ask yourself what is important to you and what is different about the destination. Is the nightlife much better? Maybe. Are the lifts better? Maybe. Are the resorts vibrant and busy? Sometimes. However, Let’s not get confused about what we are really travelling for, we are venturing halfway around the globe for the love of snow, and is Japan’s snow really that good? Absolutely.

The main reasons for this is the quality and quantity of the snow. Niseko gets, arguably, one the best dumping of quality snow in Japan at a staggering 14m of snowfall per year. To explain this profound snowfall and the snow quality, we need to look to science! Japan is massive archipelago, meaning that all of its constituent islands are surrounded by ocean. During the winter months, an extremely cold mass of air gathers over south-eastern siberia and makes its way over the, relatively warm, sea of Japan. As it does so, it soaks up plenty of moisture and when it makes landfall, it hits the 3000m mountains which forces the clouds to empty and dissipate. As this process happens, it blesses us with snow that is comprised of roughly 94% air and 6% water, perfect powder to shred.

The Nightlife

One of the most exciting aspects of Niseko, outside of its fabulous snow, is its incredible nightlife. You could go to Niseko for years on end and still not have explored all the awesome nightlife options that include anything from five seat izakayas to high class wine bars. The après culture in Niseko is categorically the best in Japan, for example, the bar at the Vale sits on the slopes and you can lose hours with friends and family over a few beverages and some nibblies whilst watching the unsuspecting rookie face plant it!

These diverse options are split over two major regions, Higashiyama and Hirafu. The Higashiyama area is smaller of the two areas and is home to both the Hilton and the Green Leaf hotels, which have roughly 20 bars and restaurants in the surrounding area. Where as Hirafu is home to countless restaurants and bars, most of which are located in upper hirafu. Hirafu-zaka is the main street in upper Hirafu and is where the action is, enjoy supreme freedom of choice with fan favorites such as Thai, french, Fusion, Mexican and Pizza all available.
