HAKUBA

Hakuba boasts the steepest runs of Japan’s 600 ski resorts. Hakuba is home to seven resorts, which encircle the massive Olympic Ski Jump Stadium. Consistent powder snow on many challenging runs at Hakuba makes this region a high priority destination for serious ski travelers in Japan. The distinct small village atmosphere of this resort town is another major drawcard. Growing popularity among skiers and snowboarders around the world is testament to its charm.

The Resorts

Hakuba boasts the steepest runs in Japan, which is quite incredible considering Japan has more than 600 ski resorts! There are 9 major ski resorts in Hakuba, which encircle the centerpiece of the 1998 olympics, the ski jump stadium. All of Hakuba’s ski resorts operate a fully enclosed gondola ski lift, which offers easy and comfortable access to the main slopes. There are also quad and double seat “express” chairlifts which give participants fast access to runs, if you can brave the conditions. Double chairs are used most commonly used for the advanced runs.

Stretching over 190km², Hakuba offers you an ease of access to its 9 ski resorts Happo One, Hakuba 47, Goryu, Tsugaike, Cortina, Norikura, Iwatake, Kashimayari and Jiigatake. Your lift pass will give you unrestricted day access to any of Hakuba’s incredible ski resorts, for night skiing or snowboarding, you will need to purchase an individual pass at the resort.

Getting there

Roughly 4 hours outside of central Tokyo, Hakuba has benefited from the wonderful network of transport available throughout Japan, giving skiers and snowboarders ease of access from all major cities on the island of Honshu. There are various options for travelers to get to Hakuba, these include train, bus and car. The fastest route to Hakuba is catching a combination of train and bus, that would see you get to Hakuba in 3.5-4hrs. This gives you the fantastic experience of traveling on the Shinkansen bullet train, a must do whilst in Japan. The alternate route is by catching the Nagano Snow Shuttle. This service departs from Narita or Haneda airports and is the most direct option, albeit slightly more expensive and requires more time, roughly 5.5hrs.

There are many other options for getting to Hakuba from all major cities. We are well versed in getting travelers from A to B with seamless connectivity. For more information, please contact us.

The Snow

Hakuba has become a first rate choice for Skiers and snowboarders from all corners of the globe. This is largely due to the quality and the quantity of the snow that falls on the towering mountains, which is regarded as some of the softest and finest in the world. Due to its geography, Japan receives “Ocean Effect Snow”, wherein ice cold Siberian northwesterly air masses make their way across the warmer sea of Japan, causing a mass evaporation of salt rich moisture from the surface of the Sea of Japan and form rather large cloud systems. As these clouds collide with the massive Japanese Alps, they are forced above 3,000m where they are forced to dump out masses of light, powdery snow that Japan has become famous for.

Hakuba is well regarded as an overall ski destination for all levels of skill, however, it has got more on offer for beginner and intermediate skiers & boarders with plenty of long, well groomed runs. Veterans who tend to like an odd off-piste adventure or two may feel slightly stifled by the strict approach to off-piste and tree skiing at most of the Hakuba resorts. Heavily policed, most resorts will not tolerate such behavior. However, there is a shining light at the end of the perennial tunnel of rules at the ski resort of Cortina, with its excellent, untouched powder and trees combined with its extremely lax approach to off-piste skiing and snowboarding.

The Nightlife

Enjoying the wonders of Japanese powder is not the only drawcard for Hakuba and her resorts, rather, it is the exquisite combination of snow sports and its diverse nightlife, which offers a little bit for everyone. Whether it a cheeky snow cold beer and a feed at the Mominoki pub, a delightful coffee and cake at the Green Plaza or perhaps head over to one of countless onsen hot springs to rejuvenate your muscles for another day of skiing. Take to the night and hakuba will provide in any way you see fit!

Another aspect of Hakuba’s nightlife is it’s incredible aptitude to provide heartwarming food. Located in the central Japanese alps, Hakuba sources some of the best produce from all corners of Japan from rare and delicate fish from the Sea of Japan or even marvelous Hida Beef grown with precision and care in the nearing region of Gifu.  These can be seen in the finest of restaurants serving up an outstanding array of gastronomic pleasures, to a humble Izakaya. Boasting hundreds of restaurants, bars and cafes, bask in the light of choice and explore the culinary wonders of the Japanese people
